Claudia is the BEST! I think the writers of SPN should take a lesson from the writers over at WH13 on "How to properly create a likeable female character."

Because seriously....

Totally preaching to the choir there, bb. Seriously, it makes me cringe how they portray women roles on SPN while in other shows that I watch most, if not all, the female characters are likable and competent without being forced in either the writing, acting, or both (WH13, BSG, Legend of the Seeker, Buffy, Firefly, etc). Or hey, how about a neutralized role for a woman instead of having her either become evil or a "romantic interest" or whatever? It's rather insulting that it has to be one or the other and nothing else, really.

They really need to switch up the writers, for find someone that understands and is able to write strong, competent female characters that kick ass and take names and aren't misrepresented and generalized.

/going on tangent with a mini-rantage there, sorry! It's one of the main pet peeves I have with the show.

I am SO with you. On everything you said! And this totally,

Or hey, how about a neutralized role for a woman instead of having her either become evil or a "romantic interest" or whatever?

That's why I liked Jo and Ellen and Ava so much. They were just...there (even though Ava sort of went Dark Side). I mean sure there was that whole unrequited whatever with Jo and Dean, but that was different. It was handled nicely.

I actually made a long-winded ranty post about the women on SPN a few weeks ago >>> http://high-flyer87.livejournal.com/116890.html

Awesome, putting that on my list of things to read. Love hearing the perspectives of other people about what the show has done, either good or bad. :)

Yeah, exactly. I would also like to place S3!Ruby in that category of women too, because she was also neutralized in the third season. There weren't any indications that she and Sam were ever going to get together romantically, only by subtext (and the show does better with subtext than actual text anyway). She was one of the guys, she took care of herself, and didn't bother with the love interest aspect the show often pushes, hence why I prefer her to S4!Ruby and why I don't classify them to be the same character, since it's obvious they weren't.

I also agree about the Jo/Dean situation. I thought it was handled nicely too, since yeah Jo did crush on Dean but Dean never pursued or pushed it, and Jo matured and developed once getting passed that phase which, had she and Ellen survived, I could kinda see Jo/Dean happening somewhere down the line.
